Menopause + Heart Disease: V. Tips for a healthy heart that you will love
Heart disease is the number one killer of women; cardiovascular disease is the cause of half of the deaths for women over the age of 50. These risks increase even more if certain unhealthy lifestyle habits continue to exist including but not limited to unmanaged pre-existing health conditions, smoking, high cholesterol, obesity, and stress. Here are V. quick tips to help maintain and elevate heart health (and a few other things) during menopause and beyond.
i. Eat a healthy well-balanced diet that is low in salt, saturated/trans fats and high in fiber + lean proteins. Make sure you get enough calcium and Vitamin D for strong bone health.
ii. Exercise regularly to maintain a healthy body weight, lower blood pressure, and relieve stress. Add weight-bearing exercises to slow down bone loss.
iii. Don’t smoke and avoid exposure to secondhand smoke as much as possible.
iv. Stay positive. Women in menopause are at higher risk for depression which increases the risk for heart attack and stroke.
v. Treat and control pre-existing medical conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure through lifestyle management and medication when necessary.
