V. Simple C-section tips to help with your recovery
Having a new baby is challenging and when the birth occurs by C-section it can be difficult to care for both yourself and the baby. Here are 5 (V.) simple ways to help with your recovery
i. Stay healthy pre-pregnancy, during pregnancy and post-partum
Obesity and excessive weight gain during pregnancy can not only increase the risk of C-section but it can also make healing from a C-section more difficult. Diabetes can also slow healing. If you had diabetes prior to pregnancy or during the pregnancy it is still important to maintain glycemic control.
ii. Keep the incision clean and dry
It is normal for the incision to feels sore. Over the counter medications should be adequate to control discomfort. The area may also feel a little numb or tingle, that’s the nerve endings regenerating and, the skin may feel itchy that is part of healing.
If there is drainage from the wound, especially if it has an odor, if the belly is red or if you have a fever and chills then you should be evaluated for a wound infection.
iii. Rest
It is not easy, yet it is important to get restorative rest with a newborn. Take it easy with stairs and avoid strenuous exercise but keeping mobile is important. Walking keeps the bowels moving and therefore eases constipation. Walking also helps with circulation to prevent blood clots.
iv. Post pregnancy health (the fourth trimester)
During the pregnancy most women are mindful of eating healthy, avoiding toxic habits, and staying active. It is important to continue a healthy lifestyle after giving birth.
v. Ask for help
The post-partum period is accompanied by a lot of change, physical and emotional. If something doesn’t seem or feel right, reach out and ask for guidance and accept help from friends and family.
