Once in menopause, more than half of women note that sex can cause pain. This is because estrogen drops and causes the vaginal tissues to have less elasticity and become ‘more dry’ due to less natural lubrication. If this occurs, the body tries to protect itself on the next intimate moment and involuntary tightening can occur ,and this makes the next encounter even more painful.

Here are V. sexy (and smart) ways to alleviate painful sex.

i.  Lubrication. Yes, lube helps! Water based, silicone and oil-based products are sold over the counter.

ii.  Moisturize. Moisturizing in the vulvo-vaginal area routinely can help ease the sensation of dryness. Treat your genital area gently by avoiding harsh soaps and detergents.

iii.  V is for Vigilant. Make sure you don’t have a vaginal/urinary infection which can make things feel worse.

iv. Ask For Help. This can include vaginal medication, physical therapy, vulvo-vaginal rejuvination procedures and emotional/medical support.

v. Have More Sex. This will improve blood flow to the genital area.
