V. Signs & Symptoms That Probably Mean [Peri] Menopause
Perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause are the stages of a woman’s life when her reproductive hormone levels naturally decline. It signals the end of a woman’s reproductive years. Peri-menopause is the start of the process and can start years before the actual menopause. Menopause is when a woman has not had a period for 12 consecutive months that is not due to other reasons. The average age for menopause is late 40’s-early 50’s. Post-menopause is the time after menopause is complete. A thorough discussion of your menstrual cycle in the recent past along with your symptoms is an excellent way for your doctor to determine where you are in your menopause journey. A blood test that checks your follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) can also help in making the determination.
i. IRREGULAR PERIODS
Skipping periods during this time is common. Cycles can change in length as well. Although the transition to menopause is in progress, pregnancy is not likely but possible, so, contraception should still be used. Once menopause has been reached then vaginal bleeding is no longer considered normal and should be evaluated should it occur. Most of the time the bleeding is harmless, but it could signify something serious and therefore you should consult with your doctor for further evaluation.
ii. HOT FLASHES & NIGHT SWEATS
Hot flashes are the most common symptom of menopause. It is described as a brief sensation of heat that is often associated with feeling flushed and sweaty followed by a chill. For the overwhelming majority of women, the hot flashes subside within a year or two of menopause and most women note that they become less severe and less frequent with time. Many women note that triggers can be caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods, extreme temperature fluctuations and anxiety.
iii. SLEEP DISRUPTION
Inability to fall asleep or stay asleep (insomnia) can occur with menopause. Hot flashes and night sweats are often the culprit. Relaxation techniques before bedtime can be helpful. Don’t drink too much fluid before bed to prevent the need to urinate in the middle of the night, wear comfortable night attire and keep the bedroom cool.
iv. SLOWED METABOLISM
Many women gain weight as their hormones change and transition, this is because your metabolism slows down. It may be necessary to eat less and exercise more in order to maintain your weight. Healthy food choices along with smaller portions and stopping food intake at an earlier hour can help this process.
v. SEXUAL CHANGES & VAGINAL DRYNESS
The reduced estrogen that occurs with menopause can result in vaginal dryness and atrophy of the vaginal tissues. The result of this can be vaginal discomfort and sexual issues such as painful sex, difficult to arouse and diminished sensation. This can reduce your desire for sex (libido). Vaginal lubricants and moisturizers can be helpful. For some women, a lubricant is not enough, and local hormone therapy may be beneficial.
