THE V MOST COMMON PERIOD SYMPTOMS

  i. ACNE

Acne is a common skin condition that primarily affects teenagers who are undergoing hormonal changes. This happens because of inflammation and overactivity of the oil glands under the skin.

 ii. CRAMPS

Menstrual cramps are a dull ache that are felt in your lower abdomen just before or during your period.  Your doctor will call this dysmenorrhea.  Many over the counter remedies can help alleviate the pain or discomfort as can a healthy diet, restful sleep and regular exercise. Your doctor can also offer additional treatments if necessary.

iii. BREAST TENDERNESS and BLOATING

Changes in certain hormones, estrogen and progesterone, is what creates the menstrual cycle.  Bloating and breast tenderness are common symptoms that many women experience around the time of their cycle on account of these fluctuating hormone levels.  Premenstrual breast pain as well as cramps are often effectively treated with over the counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).  If the breast discomfort is severe then it may be reasonable to consult with your doctor. The sensation of bloating is due to water retention as a result of hormone changes, once your period begins the bloating sensation should resolve.

 iv. HEADACHES

Some headaches are linked to changes in the levels of estrogen and progesterone. Women will often get menstrual headaches/migraines that begin 2-3 days before the period begins and it can linger for a few days.  Usually an over-the-counter medication can alleviate these symptoms, if those medications are not adequate then it may be reasonable to contact your doctor to discuss these symptoms and a treatment plan.

v. MOOD CHANGES/PMS & CRAVINGS

The hormonal changes in the menstrual cycle, estrogen and progesterone, can affect mood and cause irritability.  Many women also get food cravings as a pre-menstrual symptom. Eating a healthy diet, getting restful sleep and regular exercise can help. If these symptoms are causing you to have harmful thoughts or problems with your job, school or relationships then you should seek medical care right away.
