It is important to realize that while menopause itself is not a disease but rather a normal physiologic process. It does carry with it health issues, some of which are directly related to the reduction in estrogen levels and others are age related.

i. Heart health

Eating a healthy well-balanced diet and engaging in regular exercise can help promote cardiovascular wellness. This will reduce risks for heart attack and stroke.

ii. Bone health

Calcium, either from healthy food sources or supplements, and vitamin D, from food, supplements or sunlight, in combination with weight bearing exercises, promotes muscle strength and flexibility and can help prevent falls and fractures.

iii. Breast health

Familiarizing yourself with your anatomy, which includes regular self-breast exams, along with screening mammograms, are crucial for prevention and early detection of breast cancer.

iv. Weight and metabolic health

Maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise can reduce the risk of diabetes and other metabolic ailments as well as boost the immune system.

v. Sexual health

As we age, sex for many women can become more uncomfortable, if not downright painful. This is due to physical changes that result from menopause. The hormone estrogen decreases and this results in a loss of elasticity and lubrication of the vagina. Many women have found that an all-natural lubricant can ease the discomfort and add back the sexual enjoyment.

vi. Emotional health

Feeling happy is part of being healthy and this includes feeling good about yourself. If you feel sad, overwhelmed, anxious or depressed don’t go at it alone, seek help from a friend, relative or professional.
