Acne is a self-limited skin condition, meaning it is temporary, and can be treated. i. Wash your face regularly, but not too often, with a mild cleanser and moisturize with a product that does not clog pores. Try not to squeeze or pick as this can make the problematic area even more worse.
ii. Over the counter remedies with ingredients such salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide can help treat mild acne and prevent some breakouts.
iii. Antibiotics and Retinoids are prescriptions that can be oral or topical and can help reduce inflammation and unclog pores. This can treat an acne flares and prevent future breakouts as well.
iv. Accutane/Isotretinoin is a prescription used for severe or stubborn acne that does not respond well to other methods. It is important for females to use contraception when taking this medication because it can cause severe birth defects. It can also cause depression and some gastrointestinal issues.
v. Hormonal birth control and spironolactone can help with acne that is hormonally sensitive.
